Water-resistance is an essential characteristic that a good stucco tape needs to have in order to stand up to the job.
A key part of the stucco application process is to wet cure the first coat, called the scratch coat, in order to keep it from drying out. Wet curing involves periodically spraying a mist of water over the stucco. During this process, it is critical that the stucco tape that is being used to protect windows and door frames is able to withstand the spray of water and retain its holding power so that it does not fail. If the tape is not waterproof, it is likely to weaken when moisture gets on the backing and adhesive, often resulting in the tape coming loose from the surface.
