The short answer? Yes, you can apply painter’s tape to wood flooring.
However, you will want to make sure you get a tape that is designed for delicate surfaces. These tapes are often formulated with a lower tack adhesive, which allows them to remove cleanly and without damage from particularly vulnerable surfaces, like finished wood floors.
There are also tapes that are specifically designed for temporary use on wood floor surfaces, offering added durability to withstand foot traffic and exposure to elements like water and dirt. These temporary floor tapes may have different backings or a slightly heavier construction, but still provide the clean release of a delicate painter’s tape, making them an ideal choice for longer term projects or applications such as securing protective floor coverings like kraft, rosin paper and drop cloths on wood floors.
Keep in mind: finish damage is difficult and expensive to repair on wood floors, so be sure to test the tape in an inconspicuous area before using, and assure preparation and finish application are done per finish manufacturer’s recommendations.
